Job Order Contracting Industry Seeks Nominations for Highest Honor

MAULDIN, S.C., Oct. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Nominations for the annual Harry H. Mellon Award of Excellence in Job Order Contracting are open now through Nov. 30, 2012. The industry honor recognizes outstanding principles and practices of the construction-procurement system while identifying unique and innovative ways of using Job Order Contracting methods to complete construction, repair and alteration projects.

Repair, alteration and maintenance work—the core of the Job Order Contracting system—is essential for the safe and efficient use of buildings and infrastructure. While essential, this work is often not glamorous. The award recognizes the facility owners, managers and contractors who perform this important function efficiently and effectively. Recognizing the building owners and contractors as the "best" in the JOC industry establishes them as rightful role models for others to emulate in maintaining the nation's buildings and infrastructure. Named for Harry H. Mellon, the inventor of Job Order Contracting, the award is the industry's highest honor.

Projects are eligible if they utilized Job Order Contracting, including those made available through cooperative purchasing networks, and were completed in 2012. Entries must also exemplify industry best practices in order to provide high value and efficiency to the public agency owner.

Nominations must be submitted by end of day Nov. 30, 2012 at the website www.JOCinfo.com/Recognition. The winner will be chosen by a panel of industry experts and announced in January 2013. In addition, eight more outstanding Job Order Contracting projects will be recognized as Regional Awards of Excellence.

The award, established in 2008, was first presented to the 2007 Challenger Center for Space Science Education, New York City Department of Education. Other winners were:

• Headquarters Building Seismic Retrofit, Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (2009),

• Healdsburg Post Office Fire Replacement, City of Healdsburg, CA (2011).

As reduced budgets have required facility owners to complete more maintenance, repair and renovation projects with fewer dollars, increasing numbers of them have begun using Job Order Contracting.
