Job fair set to help Cargill employees get back to work
Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development helps facilitate gathering of more than 40 employers on August 14
MILWAUKEE, Aug. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Working closely with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, Cargill is conducting an August 14 job fair for beef processing facility workers impacted as a result of the company's August 1 closure of its harvest plant here. More than 40 organizations, primarily companies seeking employees to fill open positions, will attend the job fair. The job fair for impacted Cargill workers will take place in the Wisconsin Room at the American Serb Hall, 5101 West Oklahoma Avenue, Milwaukee, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
On August 7, Cargill held a company job fair at American Serb Hall, where more than 800 open positions were available from 23 of the company's locations throughout the region. Nearly 320 of the 600 impacted Cargill Milwaukee harvest plant employees expressed interest in positions with the company at other locations through the Midwest. Approximately 250 have an interest in current or future openings at Cargill's Butler, Wis., ground beef plant.
After an 18-month examination of the region's tight cattle supply, and its impact to the facility, on July 30 Cargill announced the August 1 closure of the harvest portion of its Milwaukee beef processing facility. The approximately 600 impacted employees are receiving wages for 60 days, in addition to a severance payment based on years of service, payment for earned vacation that was unused, medical coverage through the end of September (followed by eligibility for COBRA coverage through the end of the year), as well as support finding new work.
Media access at the job fair will be limited to an area outside the main room in which employers are meeting with former Cargill employees.
