Joan Miro & Picasso, Ocean's 11 Poster Signed by Rat Pack, Zane Grey Letters & More Hit Auction Block April 30 at J. Levine Auction & Appraisal
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., April 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A rare Joan Miro watercolor and gouache painting, an original Ocean's 11 movie poster signed by all of the members of the Rat Pack, the first edition of Playboy magazine featuring Marilyn Monroe on the cover and in the centerfold, an original Picasso pencil drawing, an Andy Warhol offset lithograph, and Zane Grey courtship letters to his future wife are among several hundred pieces that will hit the auction block on Thurs., April 30 during the "Spring Catalog Auction" at J. Levine Auction & Appraisal, 10345 N. Scottsdale Rd., in Scottsdale, Arizona. The public can preview items now online or in-person on Wed., April 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and again starting at 9 a.m. on Thurs., April 30 before the auction begins at 11 a.m.
Josh Levine, auctioneer and owner of J. Levine Auction & Appraisal, said the Joan Miro piece came to the auction house from a private collector. Miro, a famous Spanish Catalan artist (1893 – 1983), was best known for his surrealistic paintings and sculpture. The playful watercolor and gouache painting is expected to bring in between $200,000 and $300,000.
"It's a huge honor to auction a piece by such a renowned artist, especially here in Arizona," Levine said. "A similar piece by Miro, Ubu Roi (Le Voyage de Retour), sold in 2013 in London for more than $470,000."
Levine said the timing of the auction also has many collectors excited since this year marks what would have been Frank Sinatra's 100th birthday.
"The Ocean's 11 poster is part of a lifetime collection of more than 50 pieces of rare and important movie memorabilia that belonged to Artie Kern. It's signed by Rat packers Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop and other members of the cast," Levine said. "Artie was an audio-visual specialist who worked for songwriter Sammy Cahn, who was Frank Sinatra's personal lyricist for more than 50 years. Artie also was a memorabilia consultant to the Songwriters Hall of Fame Museum in New York City."
