Jim Murray Memorial Foundation Issues Statement on Death of Golf Legend Arnold Palmer
PASADENA, Calif., Sept. 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The entire Board of Directors of the Jim Murray Memorial Foundation (JMMF) offers our deepest and most sincere condolences on the passing of golf pioneer and legend Arnold Palmer. Mr. Palmer was truly the "King" of any course he was on. His competitive spirit, his 62 victories, and his generous nature with fans made the sport of golf better. He leaves a void that no golfer will ever be able to fill.
"Arnold was not only great to his fans, but also a very generous man when it came to his philanthropic endeavors, including his abiding support of our foundation," says Linda Murray Hofmans, founder of the Jim Murray Memorial Foundation. "His ability and desire to pay it forward helped so many of our scholarship recipients throughout the years, he leaves behind a legacy that goes well beyond the confines of the golf world, encompassing so many young sports writers recognized as Murray Scholars."
Mr. Palmer's support helped the JMMF provide scholarships each year to young and aspiring sportswriters. Jim Murray, the Los Angeles Times Pulitzer Prize winning sports columnist, knew Mr. Palmer well, often writing about his exploits on California golf courses, especially in the Palm Springs area, where Mr. Palmer owned a home.
"Arnold Palmer helped to redefine the sport of golf. More than that, he was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word," says Bill McCoy, JMMF Board President. "His conduct on AND off the golf course sets an example for all of us, whether or not we have ever swung a golf club. We will miss our friend, and the world will miss this great competitor."
The JMMF awards five $5,000 scholarships annually to students studying and entering the field of sports writing, as a means of preserving the legacy of Jim Murray and his contributions to sports journalism worldwide.
The JMMF is a CA 501(c)(3) Not-For-Profit. Federal Tax ID #94-3331025.
