KINGSTON, Mass., May 31, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Jett Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to awareness and helping fight Duchenne muscular dystrophy, recently launched the Jett Giving Fund. Under this initiative, Jett Foundation helps families afford items that greatly improve the quality of life for those with Duchenne. Diagnosed during childhood, Duchenne is the number one fatal genetic disorder that attacks and begins destroying children's muscles before the age of three.
Often costing tens of thousands of dollars, accessibility equipment vital to patients living with a muscle wasting disorder such as Duchenne, is unobtainable. Specialized equipment such as scooters, ramps and accessible vans, are often not covered by health insurance. Without these items, Duchenne patients struggle to participate in activities that most people take for granted, such as getting to and from school or going to the movies with friends.
"There isn't another program that helps families struggling to afford equipment that greatly improves a Duchenne patient's quality of life," said Neera Gulati, president of Suneel's Light Foundation, a non-profit partnering with the foundation.
So far, the program has helped families in Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin. In the first quarter of 2017, Jett Foundation raised $120,000, and by the end of the year, they hope to gift $500,000 in equipment to patients in need.
"Many families don't have the means to improve their child's quality of life. I hope the Jett Giving Fund can help ease the financial stress that is associated with the disease," said Jett Foundation executive director and founder Christine McSherry. "We want families affected by Duchenne to know that they are not alone; we are here to help."
