Just last week JetBlue was granted a beyond-perimeter slot exemption from the United States Department of Transportation to launch this new long-distance flight. JetBlue's new flights will be the only nonstop service between Washington D.C.'s downtown airport and the capital of Puerto Rico. This route will be JetBlue's 14th destination from San Juan and will operate from JetBlue's exclusive new 'home' in Terminal A at the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.
"We're very excited to launch this new service between two major capital cities and two key markets in the JetBlue network," said Rob Land, senior vice president of government affairs and associate general counsel at JetBlue. "The ability to provide this much-needed service between D.C. and San Juan is a long-sought opportunity we're happy to be able to offer thanks to the DOT and the many individuals, companies and public officials in Puerto Rico and the mainland who supported our application for this exciting new service. JetBlue has long been focused on expanding its footprint in the Puerto Rico market, where we're the largest airline today, and growing our presence at Reagan National. We expect this new route to fulfill our customers' needs while providing them with low fares, an outstanding product and our unique brand of customer service."
"Directly linking Puerto Rico's capital city with our nation's capital city will create new economic opportunities, drive successful tourism growth and increase essential business links that are key to the long-term economic growth of the Island," Governor Fortuno said. "We look forward to the start of JetBlue's new San Juan-to-D.C. direct service which will kick off new, low-cost options that benefit both residents of and travelers to Puerto Rico."

JetBlue's flights to and from San Juan will be operated with the airline's comfortable Airbus A320 fleet. JetBlue is Puerto Rico's largest airline, offering more seats in and out of the island than any other carrier with service to 13 nonstop destinations throughout the U.S. mainland and the Caribbean. Since JetBlue first began operating into San Juan in 2002, the number of fliers traveling with JetBlue to/from the Commonwealth's capital has grown an average of 28 percent each year. From San Juan, customers can connect on to St. Croix, Santo Domingo, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas.
JetBlue launched service from Reagan National in November 2010, after more than a decade of attempting to enter the tightly restricted market. Most recently, it obtained eight slot pairs at an auction held by the Department of Transportation which allowed the airline to increase its total slot holdings to 34. With its expanded access to Reagan National, JetBlue will in June increase its business-friendly schedule of seven daily roundtrip flights between Reagan National and Boston to 10 daily flights, triple its daily service to its focus cities in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Fla., and launch a new nonstop route to Tampa, Fla.
