Walters's comments follow a report published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in which the country's total short-term resident departures increased 10.3 per cent in the first nine months of 2011. Australia's top destinations received increases in visitors, in particular the South-East Asian leisure markets, where Australians favour the short flying distances, good currency exchanges and warm climates.
In September, local flights to Thailand increased by an impressive 29.5 per cent, while those to Indonesia increased 20.9 and to Singapore, 26 per cent. In that same month, Australians had a good reason to book flights to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup, where there was an 8 per cent jump in resident outbound travel.
Walters continued, "Domestic, inbound and outbound travel plays an important role in developing Australia's tourism industry. For this reason, it is very exciting to see strong performance of the industry so far this year, and we hope this will continue into 2012."
