Jerabek Elementary School Awarded $5,000 Barona Education Grant To Establish A STEM Lab
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Jerabek Elementary School was awarded a $5,000 education grant from the Barona Band of Mission Indians to create a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Lab. The public elementary school, located in San Diego's Miramar Ranch area, will use the grant to purchase 16 Lego Mindstore EV3 Core Material Kit sets to establish the STEM lab for all grade levels.
The grant was sponsored by California State Assemblyman Brian Maienschein. Barona Tribal Vice Chairman Ray Welch presented the $5,000 check to Principal Kristie Joiner, faculty and students.
"The Barona Band of Mission Indians is proud to present this grant to the faculty and students at Jerabek Elementary School," said Chairman Romero. "The new technological tools will encourage critical thinking, increase science literacy and enable the next generation of innovators."
The STEM lab is a new endeavor for Jerabek Elementary to align its curriculum with the Next Generation Science Standards adopted by San Diego Unified School District.
Since the Barona Education Grant program was launched in 2006, Barona has awarded over $3.4 million to California schools statewide. The program has equipped 689 schools with hundreds of computers, thousands of books, iPads, computer software programs and various other technologies and school supplies. The Barona Education Grant program is the first of its kind in California created and administered by a Tribal Government. The goal of the program is to create strong educational opportunities for the children of California building upon the success of the Barona Indian Charter School, which operates under a continuous improvement model. Schools throughout California can apply for educational grants from Barona to purchase much-needed supplies and materials that promote academic improvement.
