Jenner & Block's Communications Practice Expands With Addition of Former Senior FCC Official
WASHINGTON, Jan. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Jenner & Block today announced that former senior FCC official John Flynn has joined the Firm's Washington, D.C., office as a partner in the Litigation Department and Communications Practice. Mr. Flynn brings more than 15 years of communications and technology experience spanning the private sector, private practice and government.
Mr. Flynn comes to Jenner & Block from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), where he served as Senior Counsel for Transactions to Chairman Julius Genachowski. Tapped from the private sector for this specially created role, he led the FCC's review of the $30 billion joint venture between Comcast Corp. and NBC Universal, a transaction identified by the FCC and outside observers as one of the most significant media transactions in recent history. Mr. Flynn was a key architect of rules dealing with most of the leading communications issues of today and tomorrow, including those for online video, the Internet and cable and broadcast programming. The transaction review was widely credited as a success.
At Jenner & Block, Mr. Flynn's practice will focus on serving communications and technology companies in FCC matters, communications and technology litigation and transactions.
"We are very pleased to have John join the Firm," said Susan C. Levy, Managing Partner of Jenner & Block. "He is an impressive attorney who adds exceptional communications and technology experience to our strong national Communications practice."
"John will be a crucial part of our Communications Practice," said Sam Feder, Chair of Jenner & Block's Communications Practice and former FCC General Counsel. "John's high-level experience at the FCC, publicly traded communications and technology companies and the private bar are incredibly valuable. As the communication and technology industries continue to evolve rapidly, John's unique perspectives and skills will be tremendous assets to our clients."
Prior to joining the FCC, Mr. Flynn was Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for ICO Global Communications, a publicly traded next-generation satellite/wireless company. At ICO, he led the team that took the company public, secured 20 MHz of wireless spectrum licenses currently valued at more than $1 billion and quarterbacked a trial team that won a $631 million judgment, the largest jury verdict of 2008.
"I am thrilled to join Jenner & Block and help the Firm expand its Communications Group," Mr. Flynn said. "I look forward to adding my experience to Jenner & Block's highly regarded practice."
Prior to working at ICO (now known as Pendrell Corporation), Mr. Flynn served as Deputy General Counsel of Commerce One and General Counsel of rStar Broadband Networks, both publicly traded technology companies. Mr. Flynn also represented communications and technology clients at WilmerHale and Munger, Tolles & Olson.
He earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, magna cum laude, and his B.A., with distinction, and M.A. from Stanford University. He served as a law clerk to Judge Edward Becker on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and to Justices Byron White and John Paul Stevens on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Jenner & Block's nationally recognized Communications practice includes Sam Feder, former FCC General Counsel; Ajit Pai, former FCC Deputy General Counsel, and many other nationally recognized lawyers. Mr. Pai has been nominated by President Obama to be an FCC Commissioner.
