WASHINGTON, May 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Janus Global Operations (JGO), an international stability operations company, has completed a project in which it trained a group of Ukrainian military members and defense employees on the techniques of landmine action quality management.
JGO carried out the two-month project for the HALO Trust, an international non-governmental organization focused on eliminating landmines, through a humanitarian program of the U.S. Department of State's Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement. JGO, in addition to its other stability operations services, is the world's largest commercial demining company.
The training included quality assurance of humanitarian demining using manual and mechanical methods as well as mine detection dogs; battle area clearance; and explosive ordnance disposal as it relates to humanitarian mine action. The dozen Ukrainian military members and employees trained by JGO will now be able to perform quality assurance roles as they form the core of Ukraine's National Mine Action Centre.
"Landmine dangers in conflict areas exist throughout the world and Ukraine is taking action to ensure it's able to deal with the problem in whatever form it presents itself," said Matt Kaye, JGO chief executive officer. "We were privileged to work with the HALO Trust, which is doing indispensable work globally on landmines and explosive remnants of war.
"The humanitarian concerns of the U.S. State Department enabled this project to take place, and people's lives will quite literally be saved for many years to come through what was learned by the people trained through this program," Kaye added.
The course curriculum was designed jointly by the HALO Trust and JGO, and was centered on international mine action standards, the framework issued by the United Nations that guides mine action programs to achieve effectiveness and safety. Training sites included Kamianets-Podilskyi and Kramatorsk, Ukraine.
