Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Invites Proposals for its 2016 Good Neighbor Grants
LANSDOWNE, Va., Oct. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, the largest scholarship foundation in the country, has opened its Good Neighbor Grant program and invites proposals from nonprofit organizations in the Greater Washington Metropolitan Area that help high-potential students with financial need make academic gains through enrichment, rigor, critical thinking, and creativity.
This program offers one-time grants of $10,000 to $35,000 to nonprofit organizations that focus on educating young people in the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC areas. Examples of eligible programs include: afterschool academic enrichment opportunities, college access advising programs, arts programs, service learning, and innovative programs that bridge technology and education. Funds may also be used for the development of education-related products that will directly benefit students such as handbooks, training guides, and other written and digital media.
"Through our national scholarship and grant programs, the foundation aims to support the brightest kids from the poorest families to develop their abilities as though they were from wealthy backgrounds," said Executive Director Harold O. Levy. "The Good Neighbor Grants program complements our mission of advancing the education of exceptionally promising students with financial need by supporting local organizations that open doors to extraordinary opportunities for students in the DC region."
Past recipients of Good Neighbor Grants include:
Center for Inspired Teaching (Washington, DC) -- $35,000 to support the center's four-week summer enrichment program, Dive Into Inquiry. The summer enrichment program was offered to 100 students at Capital City Public Charter School in Washington, DC.
College Access Fairfax (Fairfax, VA) – $10,870 to support the Financial Aid Champion Program, which provides FAFSA completion guidance to low-income students and parents at four high schools.
Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra (Loudoun, VA) – $35,000 to launch the Preparatory Retreat for Excellence in Performance—an exciting new program, which will offer 80 students advanced music instruction and performance opportunities, and the creation of an audition recording that will enable the LSYO to perform at a nationally recognized performing arts venue in 2016.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is dedicated to advancing the education of exceptionally promising students who have financial need. By offering the largest scholarships in the country, comprehensive counseling and other support services to students from 7th grade to graduate school, the foundation is dedicated to ensuring high-performing, low-income students have the support necessary to develop their talents and excel educationally. In addition to its scholarship programs, the foundation provides grants for innovative, high-impact initiatives that benefit such students. By doing so, the Cooke Foundation seeks to use its resources to end the Excellence Gap, the disparity between the number of low and high income students who reach the top levels of academic performance. Founded in 2000, the Foundation has awarded $147 million in scholarships to nearly 2,000 students and over $88 million in grants. www.jkcf.org
