Jack Hagelin, Technical Fellow with Boeing, Wins SAE International Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering and Technology Award

WARRENDALE, Pa., Dec. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Jack S. Hagelin, a Technical Fellow in the Loads & Dynamics department of the Boeing Commercial Flight Sciences Organization, has been honored with the SAE International Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering and Technology (AASET) Award. Hagelin was presented the award during the SAE AeroTech Congress and Exhibition Awards Banquet, held in Toulouse, France in October 2011.

The SAE International Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering and Technology (AASET) Award was established in 2010 and honors Atkins, who serves as Vice President, Product Integrity and Functional Excellence, with Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

Hagelin earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Montana State University. He began working at Boeing in 1978 as a dynamic loads engineer, developing the dynamic landing and taxi design loads for the 767-200. In the following years he worked on many airplane projects, developing simulation software, and has received patents for engine vibration reduction and hard landing indication systems. Hagelin has contributed significantly to the design and certification of Boeing Commercial airplanes including the 737NG, 757, 767, 777, 787-8, and 747-8.

As a Boeing Technical Fellow, Hagelin is called upon across the Boeing Enterprise to help resolve critical structural dynamics problems arising during design, testing, and in-service operation. Hagelin is recognized internationally as a top expert in the field of landing gear dynamics and aircraft dynamic ground loads analysis. He is also a current member of SAE in the A-5 Aerospace Landing Gear Committee and is chairman of several committees.

These accomplishments have been made despite the complete loss of Hagelin's central vision causing legal blindness as a result of Stargardt's disease, a rare genetic retinal dystrophy which currently has no treatment.

The award is funded through an endowment of $25,000 by the Boeing Company and will be awarded annually in perpetuity. Nominees will be judged on the accomplishments that have impacted the aerospace industry, including the leadership role he or she played in such contributions. Also, nominations will include how the nominee worked through their disability to achieve the described accomplishments, including the information that highlights the technical achievements and reflects the conviction to succeed.
