iWin "Wins" With Opscode
Leading Developer, Publisher and Distributor of Casual Games Deploys Hosted Chef to Automate Infrastructure, Boost Scalability and Free up Resources
SEATTLE, June 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Opscode, Inc., the leader in cloud infrastructure automation, today announced that iWin, Inc., a leading online developer, publisher and distributor of casual games for the mass market, is successfully using Hosted Chef from Opscode to increase its efficiency and automate its infrastructure and related management. As a result of this successful deployment, iWin is saving both time and money, alleviating stress from its operations staff and continuing to ensure that its customers can access its games anytime, anywhere.
iWin, Inc. is a leading casual and social games creator, distributor and publisher for the mass market. iWin.com is one of the leading casual game portals, reaching and interacting with millions of visitors and gamers both domestically and internationally every month. With its current operations team, iWin needed a faster, more efficient configuration management engine that offered repeatability and accuracy to help automate its infrastructure and related management processes, and reduce the need for time-consuming costly manual updating.
Facing an upcoming large-scale project leveraging a legacy operating infrastructure, the operations team hit a crossroads. "The sheer amount of labor involved for the project was simply unmanageable," says Shadow Roldan, iWin's director of technical operations. "We were in a position where we would have had to manually configure and update our entire infrastructure which would have put our customers at risk of not being able to access our latest games."
After evaluating several solutions, iWin engaged Opscode to deploy Hosted Chef to keep them operating smoothly and seamlessly for their millions of users, while improving overall service and system management. Realistically, iWin needed to push itself into a more managed state, scale more quickly and easily, and operate with more agility.
iWin was able to leverage Hosted Chef, the world's first and only software as a service for automated infrastructure configuration and management, to achieve not only a faster and easier configuration, but fully automated monitoring of graphing, statistical trending and log analysis, which reduced errors and eliminated the need for costly manual labor.
"We are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were a year ago and that is a huge accomplishment. Getting on board with Opscode was one of the best things that we did," continues Roldan. "We are in a better position to scale faster and our customers receive the best possible solution designed to scale elegantly and quickly utilizing Hosted Chef and Chef. It's a win for us and a win for our customers."
Based on the implementation of Hosted Chef, iWin is better positioned to easily manage growth as they bring additional large scale games to market. The company can now more efficiently automate its processes and plans to add a second data center to complement its current 217 virtual and physical servers. Additionally, iWin plans to begin moving to the cloud in the next several months.
"A large part of iWin's business is based on providing a reliable and fast experience for gamers playing their favorite games on Facebook or on the portal. Now that Hosted Chef has increased its efficiency in configuration management, iWin can rest easy knowing they have the resources to focus on rapid scale, while still ensuring outstanding customer service," said Adam Jacob, chief product officer, for Opscode. "We are thrilled to be able to help iWin achieve this goal and look forward to partnering with them on future projects."
