WILTON, Conn., May 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Puppy season is almost here – and many families will be adding a pet to their household during the next month or two. Late spring and early summer are peak time for puppy adoption because people expect to have time during the summer to attend to the needs of their new addition.

"Helping a puppy adjust to his new environment takes planning: it's like preparing your home for a new baby," says Traci Simo, head of Manners Training for the Canine Company®. "Our professional trainers work with thousands of dogs each year and know how to ease the transition." She recommends:
Educate yourself. It's important to start training your new pet right away, so don't wait until you bring puppy home to learn how to house and crate train. The Training Tails section of the Canine Company website has lots of free advice about puppy care.
Invest in a quality crate. Early and consistent use of a crate will speed housetraining. A puppy usually won't soil where he sleeps, so put him in his crate anytime you can't be with him. Because dogs have an instinctive desire to den, the crate will quickly become a place puppy feels safe and secure when alone. Be sure to choose a crate with a divider that puppy can grow into.
Puppy-proof the family room. Until fully house trained, puppy should be confined to one room or area that can be made puppy safe. Place her crate and toys there and remove expensive area rugs that might be damaged. Hide wires, plants and anything that poses a danger if puppy chews it. Be sure to purchase a few sturdy toys that will stand up to chewing.
Install a pet boundary system around your yard. Puppies need lots of exercise to stay healthy and well behaved. An electronic pet containment system, like Invisible Fence®, creates a well-defined area that puppy can't dig under or jump over, keeping him safe in your yard. With proper training, puppies as young as eight weeks old can learn to observe safe-area boundaries.
