LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Saturday, January 30, 2016, the "It's Our Turn: Young Women's Conference at Brentwood School" drew a crowd of nearly 1,000 students from more than 100 schools throughout Los Angeles to participate in presentations and panel discussions by an impressive range of female leaders, including Honorary Chair Maria Shriver and special guests Diane von Furstenberg, Cindy Crawford and Nicole Richie. The FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy was also on display.
Diane von Furstenberg began the day by recounting her incredible life with grace and humor. Her powerful observation, "the most important relationship you have is the one you have with yourself," set the tone for a conference full of reflection and motivation. Girls in Grades 7 through 12 attended sessions ranging from advocacy, entrepreneurship, professional paths, self-expression, identity and body image, social media empowerment, relationships, and transforming stereotypes. The girls also heard from two Olympic Gold Medalists – Allyson Felix and Jordyn Wieber about dedication, sacrifice, and the journey to triumph as an elite athlete. Two young execs from Google and Snapchat captivated the audience with a road map to professional opportunities for women in the ever-evolving world of technology.
This was the third conference planned by an ambitious group of high school students at Brentwood School, a K-12 independent school in Los Angeles, CA. As Honorary Chair, Maria Shriver aptly pointed out, the event is a labor of love. This year, a new group of girls continued the mission to empower young women to take charge of the future in positive ways that influence and inspire others. As the mission statement of the young women planning the conference describes, "Our goal is to seek wisdom and guidance from others, empower ourselves, and inspire those around us." Through three exciting keynote presentations, two tracks of interactive, discussion-based breakout sessions, and a host of dynamic panels, the conference strives to impact how the young women in attendance think and feel about themselves as individuals, friends, and leaders.
Brentwood is a school that actively seeks ways to connect with the greater community through unique opportunities. "It's Our Turn: Young Women's Conference at Brentwood School" is one of many exciting programs created by the school and offered to the public.
