It's a Summer of Seuss at Naples Zoo
First-Ever Touring Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden Features Iconic Characters
NAPLES, Fla., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- During Summer of Seuss at Naples Zoo, families can come face-to-face with The Cat in the Hat, The Grinch, Sam I Am from Green Eggs and Ham, Yertle the Turtle and The Lorax. These famous characters are immortalized in fine art bronzes as a tribute to the literary and artistic legacy of Theodor Seuss Geisel - better known to millions as Dr. Seuss. From May 29 to August 1, 2010, guests will discover a Zoo-full of Seussian fun with colorful character cutouts, a scavenger hunt, Seuss stories, and a Fun Facts Illustrated Tour featuring that unmistakable artwork. And The Lorax will be glad to hear that visitors who purchase discount children's tickets online will be helping to plant trees!
Throughout the 43-acre garden, visitors can pose for photos with full color cutouts. Who wouldn't want to hobnob with Horton the Elephant, giggle with The Grinch, caterwaul with The Cat in the Hat, and laugh with The Lorax? Children are drawn to delightful Seussian illustrations placed just for them alongside the real animals. Each colorful graphic features Dr. Seuss's unique creatures with a child-friendly fun fact about the real animals.
On designated days, Collier County Public Library will present short programs based on Dr. Seuss books. The zoo will also present select pieces from the Secret Art of Dr. Seuss, including his three-dimensional "Unorthodox Taxidermy" like the Goo-Goo Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast, courtesy of Gallery One.
During Summer of Seuss, young guests can also help The Lorax speak for the trees. For each discounted child ticket purchased online at http://www.napleszoo.org/seuss and redeemed from May 29 to August 1, 2010, Naples Zoo will plant a tree in Africa, Asia, or the Americas.
Summer of Seuss provides an opportunity for the public to enjoy the life principles and nostalgic memories connected with Dr. Seuss's most beloved books and characters. The Sculpture Garden tour is organized by Chase Art Companies and curator William W. Dreyer and is a cooperative effort locally funded in part by Collier County Tourist Development Tax.
Ted Geisel changed the way generations of children learned to read with 44 books written between 1937 and 1990. As Dr. Seuss said, "Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living; it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities."
