It's a Classic: Santa Monica 5K/10K to Benefit Heal the Bay
On-site registration still available; or, cheer on runners & join beach cleanup
LOS ANGELES, May 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Thousands of runners from across Los Angeles will gather in Santa Monica this Sunday, May 15th, for the sixth annual Santa Monica Classic. The event, which includes both 5K & 10K races, will continue the tradition of raising funds and awareness for environmental non-profit Heal the Bay.
More than 4,000 participants will race through Santa Monica, down a palm-lined course that showcases stunning ocean views as runners charge down Ocean Avenue toward the finish line just steps from the world-famous Santa Monica Pier. The race also features a popular beach clean-up that is open to the public, and an exciting expo at the pier featuring a variety of environmentally conscious vendors and music, as well as an awards ceremony.
Registration for the Santa Monica Classic is still open. Runners are encouraged to stop by the pre-race expo on Saturday, May 14th at the K-Swiss storefront at 2427 Main Street from 10:00am to 4:00pm, or register on race day, Sunday, May 15th beginning at 6:30am.
"The Santa Monica Classic brings together runners, a great cause and a lot of sunshine," said LA MARATHON LLC Chief Operating Officer Nick Curl. "Join us on Sunday for a fun and festive day."
All runners and spectators are encouraged to join a post-race beach cleanup led by Heal the Bay. The half-hour beach cleanup is expected to feature hundreds of participants and will begin on the south side of the Santa Monica Pier by the volleyball courts at 10:00am. Heal the Bay representatives will have all supplies that are needed, but organizers recommend wearing closed-toe shoes and bringing sunscreen and water. Heal the Bay makes Southern California coastal water and watersheds, including Santa Monica Bay, safe, healthy and clean.
