Italy: Collaborations Will Underpin a Vibrant FTTx Future, Pyramid Finds
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- FTTx in Italy is expected to grow from a 3 percent share of total access lines in 2011 to fiber accounting for 20.2 percent of total access lines in 2016 thanks to a combination of operator and government enforced initiatives, according to a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).

"In 2010, there were a rush of announcements from operators on how they wanted to address the provision of fiber networks to the largest towns and cities in Italy, but the limited economic benefit of rollouts to more rural areas resulted in government intervention," says Sylwia Boguszewska, Senior Analyst at Pyramid Research. After seven telcos signed an initial agreement in November 2010, the Ministry of Economic Development launched its finalized Fiberco plan eight months later to provision next-generation connectivity to the 50 percent of Italian homes that did not fall under the original deployment plans of the largest telcos. The plan is to provide 100Mbps connectivity to all of these homes by 2020. "The continued and effective collaboration between operators included in the Fiberco partnership will provide a greater revenue opportunity for all concerned," she adds.
