IT Jobs Growth Continues Deceleration; Engineering Employment Improves Modestly

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The number of IT jobs grew 0.17 percent sequentially last month to 5,163,600, according to TechServe Alliance, the national trade association of the IT & Engineering Staffing and Solutions industry. On a year-over-year basis, IT employment grew by 3.1% since September 2015 adding 156,900 IT workers.

While still sluggish, engineering employment increased modestly, growing 0.1 percent sequentially to 2,538,200.  On a year-over-year basis, growth in engineering employment still remains anemic increasing by only 0.7% since September 2015 or 17,200 engineering workers.

"While the rate of growth in IT employment continues to decelerate, it is important to put this trend in context. While demand is not as robust in certain sectors and for some skill sets, there continues to be a chronic shortage for high demand IT skills," stated Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. "Further, despite the deceleration in the rate of growth, IT employment continued to outperform the overall job market on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis," observed Roberts.
