It is Too Late to Buy Travel Insurance for Iceland's Bardarbunga Volcano, says Squaremouth
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, August 30, Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano erupted. While the long-term impacts on travel remain to be seen, most travel insurance providers are already excluding coverage for any losses related to the volcano. According to Squaremouth, America's fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, for most providers, it is too late to purchase a travel insurance policy to cover the volcano.
Travel insurance is designed to protect travelers from the unforeseen. "Once an event is foreseeable, it can become excluded from a travel insurance policy," explained Squaremouth co-founder and CEO, Chris Harvey. "Once the eruption occurred, travel insurance providers began considering losses related to the volcano, including cancelled or delayed flights, as foreseeable."
Most travel insurance providers are using August 30, 2014 as the cutoff date for coverage, meaning any policies purchased on or after that date, will not cover Bardarbunga. One provider, Allianz Global Assistance, excluded coverage of the volcano as early as August 22nd. Travelers who purchased a policy before the eruption, may have coverage benefits if their trip is affected by Bardarbunga.
Squaremouth has launched The Icelandic Volcano and Travel Insurance Information Center to keep travelers up-to-date with official travel insurance provider position statements, frequently asked questions, and travel warnings. This is updated daily by Squaremouth's team of industry experts.
