ISRA: Rep. Willis' Latest Gun Control Proposal Ignores Reality Of Violent Crime
SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Feb. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):
"A really dumb idea," is how the ISRA is characterizing a gun control bill recently introduced by Illinois State Representative Kathleen Willis (D-Northlake). If signed into law, Willis' proposal would prohibit organizations from holding fund raising events where prizes included popular firearms. The ISRA believes that the citizens of the 77th District would be better served if Rep. Willis turned her legislative efforts away from lawful citizens and towards predatory criminals who roam city streets.
"I cannot fathom why Rep. Willis – or anyone else for that matter – would believe that HB4338 represents sound public policy," commented ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. I have to wonder if Willis could really keep a straight face when telling her constituents that streets are safer now because she prevented the scouts from raffling off a target rifle. Could Willis really look the voting public in the eye and claim that when she prohibited a local hunting club from raffling a shotgun, she made home invasions a thing of the past? Would Willis ever be able to put enough spin on the notion that rapists, robbers, muggers and murderers are armed by raffles run by veterans' groups?"
"Let's face it, nothing in HB4338 has anything to do with crime," continued Pearson. "This is all about punishing lawful citizens who dare to own firearms. Rep. Willis isn't fooling anybody – especially the millions of law-abiding Illinois gun owners. The ISRA and its friends will fight against HB4338 and any other bill that attacks the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. At the same time, the ISRA will partner with sensible members of the general assembly to get meaningful crimefighting legislation to the governor's desk.
The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful, and responsible firearms ownership. For more than a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of millions of law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.
