ISE Seeks "Hacker Backers" To Protect Internet of Things

BALTIMORE, July 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Independent Security Evaluators (ISE), the security consulting and research firm organizing the landmark hacking concept IoT Village, today announced a crowdfunding campaign to better secure connected devices.

IoT Village, which features speakers, workshops, press events and hacking contests, will focus on a wide range of internet-connected devices, including door locks, toys, storage systems, routers, time clock systems, surveillance systems and more. "We are launching this crowdfunding campaign partly because a security initiative of this scale is very capital-intensive, but most importantly, because this is a community effort," explains Ted Harrington, one of the lead organizers of IoT Village and the Executive Partner at ISE. "The success of this initiative relies on what we refer to as 'hacker backers': individuals motivated to help this critically important mission succeed."  IoT Village's newly launched Kickstarter campaign can be found here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/649424217/iot-village-at-def-con-by-ise. Some of the top performing Kickstarter campaigns of all time include famous connected devices such as the Pebble Watch ($20.2m raised) and PonoMusic ($6.2m raised). "People love to be part of creating great products through crowdfunding campaigns," states Steve Bono, one of the lead organizers of IoT Village and the founder of ISE, "and here is an opportunity for individuals to also ensure that their privacy and security are safeguarded through a similar funding mechanism." 

ISE also announced the speakers for the IoT Village talk track:

• Brian Knopf (Wink) to examine how to effectively build security into product development on a startup budget.
• Danel Miessler (HP Fortify) to analyze IoT attack surfaces and the common vulnerabilities found in each.
• Craig Young (Tripwire) to present his research exploiting the top selling smart hub home automation systems.
• Wesley Wineberg (Synack) to present his research exploiting 14 different connected devices in the home.
• Aaron Guzman (Belkin) to examine the lifecyle of IoT development in order to better articulate secure design.

Additionally, organizers announced that IoT Village will feature another installation of the wildly popular router hacking contest SOHOpelessly Broken, which debuted last year as the first-ever router hacking contest at DEF CON.  "SOHOpelessly Broken laid the foundation for what has become IoT Village," explains Harrington, "and given the overwhelmingly positive response to SOHOpelessly Broken in the many iterations we've hosted of the contest since, it was an easy decision to throw it again here at our newest concept: IoT Village."

IoT Village is a new hacking event, to be debuted at esteemed information security conference DEF CON, with the mission of improving  security in so-called Internet of Things devices.  IoT Village runs August 7-9, 2015 at DEF CON 23, co-located between Paris and Bally's casinos in Las Vegas.
