WASHINGTON, March 11, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- IRS Commissioner John Koskinen will address a National Press Club luncheon on Wednesday, April 2. It is his first appearance at NPC in his new role as head of the agency that collects more than $2.5 trillion dollars in taxes annually.
Koskinen took office last December, tackling what some call "the worst job in Washington" with a strong history for fixing troubled organizations in challenging times. During his decades in business and government, he's earned a reputation as a troubleshooter, including heading the federal "Y2K" effort; serving as Washington's deputy mayor and city administrator; and managing the mortgage-finance giant Fannie Mae during the global financial crisis.
He joined the IRS during one of the agency's lowest periods, amid a controversy over the treatment of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. The IRS has proposed a new regulation to address whether and to what extent social welfare organizations can engage in political activity, which has drawn more than 140,000 public comments. Koskinen also pursued an aggressive public outreach agenda to alert taxpayers about IRS services and potential tax fraud scams.
Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m., with remarks beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $22 for Press Club members and $36 for all other non-member tickets. Students with valid ID may purchase tickets for $21. Tickets may be purchased here. For questions, please email [email protected] or call 202-662-7501. Tickets must be paid for at the time of purchase. To submit a question in advance, put IRS in the subject line and email to [email protected] before 10 a.m. on the day of the luncheon.
