SAN JOSE, Calif., April 19, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The IPSO Alliance (IPSO) today announced that its Smart Object Guidelines are experiencing strong industry adoption, with more than 500 downloads in the past six months alone. Issued in 2014 and supplemented in 2015, the guidelines, which define smart-object models for IoT interoperability, are continuously updated using the Open Mobile Alliance's (OMA) OMA LwM2M Management Object and Resource Editor.
IPSO also announced that it has started work on the next generation of IoT interoperability by defining an entirely new and unique model that allows smart objects to interoperate with each other, regardless of the device's protocol, security, bootstrap or commissioning. This addresses scalability, one of the key IoT challenges as we move from millions to billions of nodes that need to communicate.
"The large-scale adoption of our Smart Object Guidelines and support from organizations like OMA validate IPSO's approach to device interoperability," said Christian Légaré, president and chairman of the IPSO Alliance. "However, we are not resting on our laurels. There is a clear need for a solution that will scale with the IoT's exponential growth, and this is driving development of our new model. Our members gain a clear competitive advantage from having access to this work before it is available to the industry at large."
IPSO's latest R&D effort is poised to achieve the next breakthrough in IoT interoperability by allowing machines to exchange data and metadata effortlessly—the only known approach that eliminates the need for translators. This new model universally defines all things, so that each specific thing, including its objects and resources, no longer needs to be predefined and preregistered. Work also continues within IPSO to advance IoT device security, which is clearly needed to enable the IoT to reach its full potential.
All of IPSO's work is member-driven, and the organization is seeking new members to further its R&D efforts. All Alliance members are invited to attend the next Member Meeting taking place June 5-6, 2017, at the International Telecommunication Union building in Geneva. During the meeting, the Semantic, Protocol, and Security and Identity working groups will present on their recent progress and host working sessions.
Additionally, the Alliance will be offering a proof-of-concept demonstration on the next generation of IoT interoperability at its IoT Week booth (collocated with the IPSO Alliance Spring Member Meeting). IoT Week will take place June 6-9, 2017, at the International Conference Centre in Geneva.
