REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Aug. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, announced today that Carrier IP Telephony market revenue grew over fifteen percent in the second quarter of 2014 versus the year-ago period. Driven by network-based capital spending on infrastructure, to enable Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services, three significant market segments experienced robust growth. High-growth segments included IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Core, Session Border Controllers (SBCs) and Voice Application Servers (VAS).

"While service providers such as T-Mobile USA have been offering Voice over WiFi for some time, the expected availability of Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) capabilities for Apple's new iPhone 6 and other devices capable of an upgrade to iOS 8 will drive new demand for network-based VoWiFi capabilities such as IMS, SBC and VAS systems," said Chris DePuy, Vice President of Carrier IP Telephony research at Dell'Oro Group. "So, while we expect the number of service providers that commercial launch VoLTE services to increase as much as three-fold by year-end, we may now see VoWiFi become an incremental driver to the adoption of these newer segments."

The overall Carrier IP Telephony market, which includes devices used to serve both circuit switched subscribers, Voice over IP (VoIP) and Voice over LTE subscribers, topped $1.7 billion in the second quarter 2014.
