Run by the Project Basho Photography Center in Philadelphia in the United States since 2007, ONWARD is an annual photography competition that receives entries from around the world including the US and Japan for the purpose of promoting emerging photographers. The competition has been held every autumn and invited entries of works that challenge new possibilities in artistic photography.
RING CUBE will show 70 prize-winning works (from 63 photographers - among them the 2 grand prize winners -- including 3 Japanese photographers) selected by the juror, Larry Fink, from among about 2,300 entries. The two grand prize winners and Mr. Tsuyoshi Ito, director of Project Basho, are expected to attend the event in Japan and a portfolio preview is planned to be held by Mr. Larry Fink during the event.
For Ricoh, RING CUBE is more than just a "place to show and appreciate photographs." RING CUBE aims to be a spot that opens up all the possibilities of photography, a place where people who contemplate self-expression through photographs can congregate and enjoy photographs. RING CUBE will continue to hold events that showcase a wide variety of photographers, both professional and amateur.
[About Project Basho]
Project Basho is a photography resource center located in Philadelphia, the USA. It was started in 2002 by Mr. Tsuyoshi Ito as a "place - basho in Japanese" to gather for the people who are interested in photography.
Project Basho is committed to reintroducing photography to the community by providing a space that is conducive to the advancement of the medium and by fostering a vibrant culture of photography through an array of educational programs.
With the community darkroom as the locus of the program and the gallery space, Project Basho manages exhibitions and competitions as well as introductory and advanced classes and specialized workshops in photography and destination trips for photographers to experience culture through photography.
[About Project Basho's "ONWARD" Photo competition]
"ONWARD" is an annual juried photography competition organized by "Project Basho" for exclusively featuring the works of emerging photographers every autumn. It was started in 2007 and it has invited powerful photographers in the US photography field as jurors such as Andrea Modica and Debbie Fleming Caffery.
"ONWARD" offers young photographers the opportunity to present their vision and talent to a broad audience in the US, and collects a number of applicants. Photographs selected by jurors are featured internationally in a group exhibition at the Project Basho Gallery as well as at the ONWARD online gallery, and photographers have the chance to foster and grow a vibrant and rich photography community. ONWARD '11 is the first year that we are translating our submission guidelines into Japanese and Spanish in addition to English in order to build upon that international success and to further our global reach.
