Investigation Discovery Premieres An In-Depth Special Featuring Exclusive Access To Reeva Steenkamp's Family During Trial Of Oscar Pistorius
-- Investigation Discovery Presents the World Premiere of PISTORIUS ON TRIAL: NOWHERE TO RUN on Sunday, April 13 at 9/8c --
SILVER SPRING, Md., April 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In an exclusive documentary special to air on Investigation Discovery (ID), the parents of Reeva Steenkamp, the South-African model killed by Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, speak out in an in-depth interview about the loss of their daughter and being inside the courtroom in Pretoria, South Africa. Produced exclusively for ID by NBC News' Peacock Productions, PISTORIUS ON TRIAL: NOWHERE TO RUN premieres on Sunday, April 13 at 9/8c, featuring a never-before-seen interview with June Steenkamp as she opens up about the first time she ever laid eyes Oscar Pistorius. The Gold-medal winning Paralympian had only dated Reeva for three months before her death.
In an unprecedented interview for the special, June Steenkamp says, "I think he [Oscar] has to see me, the mother, the person who gave birth to her, that he's taken that away. That's what I want to see, that's why I want to look in his face and he must look in mine. He must see now that I am there for justice for Reeva, no matter what happened, and the truth, obviously, which we don't know we'll ever get. But I hope for that."
Reeva was shot to death on Valentine's Day 2013, after locking herself inside a bathroom at Pistorius' home. Currently on trial, Pistorius has plead not guilty to a charge of premeditated murder, claiming he was acting in self-defense against who he thought was an intruder. PISTORIUS ON TRIAL: NOWHERE TO RUN reveals the thoughts and emotions of the Steenkamp family as they endure the trial of the man who killed their daughter.
"Americans have become riveted with the tale of what really happened between the beauty and the blade runner," said Henry Schleiff, president and general manager, Investigation Discovery. "The Steenkamps have suffered the unimaginable with the loss of their daughter, and we are humbled that they want to share their stories with us to shed light on the young woman Reeva was, and what may have led up to this horrible tragedy. Utilizing the resources of our longstanding, and most trusted, production partner, ID is honored to work with NBC News' Peacock Productions, who has already been reporting extensively on the event across their platforms to produce the most detailed and comprehensive account of this trial to date."
Barry Steenkamp, Reeva's father, suffered a minor stroke prior to the start of the trial and has been unable to attend court. Speaking for the first time to Peacock Productions, Barry says, "I've got my own feelings inside as to what happened, but what I do want to do, is to just to talk to him. I would like to have a chat to him, man to man. Guilty or not guilty, whatever it is. I would like to have a talk; that would help me a lot."
PISTORIUS ON TRIAL: NOWHERE TO RUN premieres on Sunday, April 13 at 9/8c. The special is produced for Investigation Discovery by NBC News' Peacock Productions, with Executive Producers Steve Anderson and Keith McKay. Sharon Scott is the President and General Manager of Peacock Productions. For Investigation Discovery, Diana Sperrazza is Executive Producer, Sara Kozak is SVP of Production, Kevin Bennett is General Manager, and Henry Schleiff is Group President of Investigation Discovery, Destination America, American Heroes Channel, and Discovery Fit & Health.
