GERMANTOWN, Md., March 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Intrexon Corporation (NYSE: XON), a leader in synthetic biology, today announced that Samuel Broder, M.D., most recently Chairman of Intrexon's Health Sector and former Director of the National Cancer Institute, has been named as Executive Vice President of Scientific and Public Affairs reporting to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Randal J. Kirk.
In the new role, Dr. Broder will lead Intrexon's communications programs with media, academia, government, and non-profit organizations. These programs will span across all sectors – Health, Food, Energy, Environment, and Consumer - and will include initiatives to augment Intrexon's scientific publications.
"With proprietary integrated technologies and comprehensive expertise, Intrexon is applying synthetic biology to develop solutions across an increasingly broad range of applications in multiple markets." Dr. Broder said. "Greg Frost has taken the reigns in the Health Sector and has already begun to apply his proven executive skillset toward advancing Intrexon's current research programs and in pursuing new collaboration partners. I now look forward to expanding my responsibilities beyond the Health arena in this new role and having the opportunity to share additional information about our endeavors with communications development across all sectors."
Randal J. Kirk, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Intrexon added, "Sam is an extraordinarily gifted scientist, physician, and executive. Indeed, few individuals have contributed so much to mankind and this is why he has earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and among the public. His pioneering leadership role in the fight against HIV/AIDS led to the current generation of therapies against this disease. In fostering a solidly responsible and scientific response to the challenge posed by what was once shaping up to be a horrible epidemic, he earned the respect and gratitude of a nation."
Mr. Kirk continued, "Among his other talents, however, he is an extraordinarily gifted communicator and a teacher of science and medicine. Having worked with him over these last few years, I can say of Sam that his new role merely acknowledges what already was the fact: he is our best spokesperson on all matters scientific and medical. Sam's deep scientific knowledgebase will help in describing our approaches to generating bio-based solutions in wide-ranging fields. I have confidence he will strengthen our communications efforts to promote further sharing of the Intrexon story."
