Internap Continues Green Data Center Leadership with Additional Energy Efficiency Certifications for its Facilities in Santa Clara and Los Angeles
New Los Angeles data center achieves Green Globes certification for its environmentally-friendly design, operation and management; Santa Clara receives ENERGY STAR certification
ATLANTA, Dec. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Internap Network Services Corporation (NASDAQ: INAP), a provider of intelligent IT Infrastructure services, today announced that its two company-owned data centers in California have achieved additional green design and energy efficiency certifications. The company's newly-opened Los Angeles data center has received Green Globes® certification following a detailed review process by the Green Building Initiative (GBI). In addition, the company's Santa Clara data center has received ENERGY STAR® certification, a program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to identify ways in which energy efficiency can be measured, documented and implemented in data centers.
These latest certifications underscore Internap's continued commitment to green building design and energy efficient operations wherever feasible across its company-owned data centers. Internap's comprehensive green approach encompasses everything from using energy simulation software to aid facility design and re-using existing building materials during construction to using renewable energy sources, green cleaning products and providing environmentally-conscious transportation options.
"We view green design, energy efficiency and sustainability as much more than checklist features, but rather a holistic approach to creating the optimum facility for IT Infrastructure that is as good for our customers' IT needs as it is for the surrounding community and environment," said Randy Ortiz, vice president of data center design and engineering at Internap. "These additional certifications underscore Internap's leadership in designing, building and operating state-of-the-art green data centers."
Los Angeles Data Center: Green Globes Certified
Located in the South Bay area with easy access to I-405 and Los Angeles International Airport, Internap's Los Angeles data center features 55,000 net-sellable square feet when fully deployed and was designed from the ground up for energy efficiency. Key features noted in its Green Globes certification include:
- Energy efficiency – nearly 50% reduction in energy use for the entire facility compared to similar buildings through the use of high-efficiency lighting, HVAC systems and intelligent controls.
- Green power – purchasing 100% of the electricity from renewable sources to power the office portion of the data center.
- Water conservation – reducing the use of potable water by more than 40% through high-efficiency lavatories.
- Recycled building materials – re-used more than 99% of the exterior structural components and almost all additional materials came from recycled content from pre- and post-consumer materials.
Internap's Los Angeles data center was also noted for using a green cleaning program featuring low-VOC products to reduce air contaminants and harmful gases as well as providing environmentally-conscious transportation options, such as carpool stalls to encourage ridesharing and close proximity to public transportation.
Santa Clara Data Center: ENERGY STAR Certified
Located in the heart of Silicon Valley with easy access to major highways and airports, Internap's Santa Clara data center spans 24,000 net-sellable square feet. Based on ENERGY STAR benchmark measurements, Internap's Santa Clara data center was significantly more efficient than the national average for data centers in key criteria:
- ENERGY STAR efficiency performance rating of 100, which is the highest level of power consumption efficiency and represents twice the national average for data centers.
- Energy intensity, or the amount of energy the data center consumes, is 36% below the national average.
- Greenhouse gas emissions are 36% below the national average, based on an analysis of the data center's power consumption, utility provider and the power plant.
Underscoring Internap's focus on green design and energy efficiency, the company's Santa Clara data center has already achieved Green Globes and LEED certifications. The facility has also been awarded Silicon Valley Power's 2012 Energy Innovator Award and was named to the InformationWeek 500 for its green data center achievements.

About ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60 different kinds of products as well as new homes and buildings. Products that have earned the ENERGY STAR designation prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the government. In 2010 alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, prevented 170 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions—equivalent to the annual emissions from 33 million vehicles—and saved nearly $18 billion on their utility bills.
