Intergraph(R) Enhances Fiber Management Capabilities
New functionality in Intergraph geospatial infrastructure management solutions enables utilities and communications providers to more efficiently manage fiber networks
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Intergraph® has expanded its utilities and communications infrastructure management solutions with enhanced capabilities for managing fiber networks in advanced grid implementations. In addition to geospatially managing traditional copper and cable communications networks, a recent update to Intergraph's G/Technology infrastructure management solution includes additional functionality for fiber management to support progressive electric, gas and communications initiatives such as smart grid and FTTx (fiber to the home, building, etc.).

"Smart grid and broadband are two key focus areas for improving infrastructure around the world," said Tony DiMarco, executive director of Global Utilities & Communications for Intergraph. "As utilities and communications companies embrace new technologies such as fiber to advance their networks, they require innovative tools like G/Technology that are specifically built to meet the unique requirements of next-generation infrastructure."
Intergraph G/Technology is a comprehensive, scalable and standards-based solution for geospatial infrastructure and asset management that can be used by communications providers adopting fiber networks to meet growing bandwidth needs, or by utilities installing fiber infrastructure to build a smart grid or offer broadband to customers. The solution provides an advanced network connectivity model that fully supports the data integrity and modeling requirements of progressive communications infrastructures, and also includes complete support for field automation and mobile applications.
SEAS-NVE, Denmark's largest consumer-owned energy company, is the first utility to leverage the newly released fiber capabilities in G/Technology to deliver advanced energy and communications services to its more than 350,000 customers.
"As governments work to improve infrastructure, and customers demand better, faster service, utilities around the world are seeking new means of managing and operating their grids," said Kim Rosenberg, GIS manager for SEAS-NVE. "Intergraph has been meeting the unique needs of utilities for more than 40 years, and we continue to rely on the company for advanced infrastructure management solutions."
Intergraph began development of its fiber network management capabilities several years ago when its customer EPB of Chattanooga (Tennessee) decided to build its smart grid infrastructure entirely on fiber optic cables. EPB's fiber optic smart grid was built to foster better communication and deliver FTTx services to home and business customers for superior video, telephone and Internet options.
"EPB of Chattanooga is a true pioneer in the use of fiber for advanced smart grid capabilities," said Steve Dover, senior corporate technical consultant for EPB. "Intergraph's technology and expertise have been instrumental in aiding us to build our fiber optic network. We are pleased to see that Intergraph continues to refine its infrastructure management solutions to meet the emerging needs of forward-looking utilities and communications companies like EPB."
