Interfaith Group Applauds Northeastern University's Decision to Remove Imam Abdullah Faaruuq
University Terminates Relationship with its Campus Imam
BOSTON, Sept. 25, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Americans for Peace and Tolerance (APT) today commended President Joseph Aoun, President of Northeastern University for terminating its relationship with controversial Boston Muslim Imam, Abdullah Faaruuq.
Northeastern's decision came after the announced release by APT of a video critical of Faaruuq who among other things has been publicly defending convicted radicals, Aafia Siddiqui and Tarek Mehanna – both of whom have been sentenced to prison. The film (www.nuextremism.com) was released on September 7.
Dr. Charles Jacobs, APT President said, "President Aoun has taken a courageous step and he has been thanked many times by Northeastern community members on the film's Facebook page www.facebook.com/nuextremism.
"While President Aoun is to be commended, he needs to continue his vigilance against radical influences at the University."
