Insureon Publishes Tips to Help Small Technology Firms Maximize Professional Liability Benefits
Leading online insurance agent offers guidelines to fill knowledge gap for the nation's smallest technology businesses.
CHICAGO, Aug. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Insureon, the nation's leading online agent of small business insurance, today published guidelines to help technology freelancers, consultants, and small-business owners enjoy more thorough protection from their Professional Liability Insurance (also called Errors & Omissions Insurance) policies.
The guidelines, available on the "You're IT" blog of it.insureon.com, include three questions that independent technology businesses can ask their insurance agents in order to clarify the coverage offered by their Professional Liability policies.
A study conducted last fall by the Freelancers Union found that a whopping 53 million Americans perform some sort of freelance work. By doing this, they expose themselves to professional liability risks, but many don't realize they have such exposures. In fact, many of those who identify as freelancers or contract workers don't even realize that the IRS considers them a small business.
"It's our mission to protect small businesses," said Ted Devine, CEO of Insureon. "As far as I'm concerned, providing insurance is only one part of that. Sole proprietors and freelancers don't have the benefit of depending on a risk management department to make sure they're protected in the event of a client lawsuit. They don't have a team of lawyers haggling over policy terms on their behalf."
To provide independent businesses with access to some of the knowledge and resources available to larger firms, Insureon published the guidelines, which suggest investigating third-party cyber coverage, verifying that all business activities are included in coverage, and reviewing claims-made requirements in policy language.
The guidelines also provide further reading opportunities that illustrate IT liability issues in the news and offer tips on preventing client lawsuits.
