Insureon Announces Winners of Its Small Business Scholarship Essay Contest
Two college student business owners will receive $2,500 toward their school expenses.
CHICAGO, June 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Insureon, the nation's leading online provider of small business insurance, today announced the winners of its inaugural small business scholarship, Gillian Davis and Suneil Kamath.
Insureon asked students to describe how a small business – whether one they owned, one they worked for, or one that supported their family – had impacted their life.
Davis wrote about Stump Sprout + Design, which she founded to create furniture out of reclaimed and recycled wood. After two years, she realized she "was ultimately building for those who had their basic needs met and could afford the luxury of a custom built piece." She wanted to expand her work to include projects that benefitted Maine's less-privileged citizens, whose quality of life could be greatly improved by a better-insulated house or updated plumbing. To achieve that dream, Davis knew she'd have to go back to school. She enrolled at Southern Maine's Architectural and Engineering Design program.
Kamath wrote about Music of the Heart (MOTH), a business he launched as a freshman in high school to bring music education and opportunities to children in schools that don't offer such programs. His inspiration came from two major life events: playing violin for patients at Nationwide Children's Hospital, where he loved watching the patients "become invigorated with joy" when they heard the music, and visiting his cousin's school in India, which lacked a music program. Today, MOTH has served more than 500 children in the U.S. and abroad.
"We're honored to support these extraordinary student business owners," said Ted Devine, insureon's CEO. "They're value-driven, community-focused, and dedicated to expanding their impact by investing in themselves. They're full-time students who run businesses and they took the time to write an essay to submit to this contest – they embody the spirit of being a small-business owner, knowing how to seize an opportunity when you're already juggling a million things."
Davis and Kamath will receive $2,500 each toward their educational expenses.
Insureon will offer another scholarship competition in the fall of 2014, for spring semester 2015. Interested applicants can see details at www.insureon.com/insureonu/small-business-scholarship.
