Insurance Department Mourns Loss of Former Assistant Commissioner Steve Garrett
OKLAHOMA CITY, Nov. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Oklahoma Insurance Department is mourning the loss of former Chief Examiner and Assistant Commissioner, Stephen P. Garrett, 69, who died Monday after a brief hospitalization.
"I have the highest level of admiration for Steve, working with him, not only while in college, but also for many years as an insurance professional," said Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak. "He was widely respected for his previous commitment to the Oklahoma Insurance Department and for his leadership in all areas of the Oklahoma insurance industry."
Garrett was a native of Mangum, Okla. He received an undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma and a law degree from Oklahoma City University. He also served as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. Garrett worked at the Oklahoma Insurance Department from 1972-1978. He spent 32 years with American Fidelity Corporation, most recently as Senior Vice President and General Counsel. At the time of his death, Garrett was chairman of the Oklahoma Guaranty Association and chairman of the Oklahoma Association of Life Insurance Companies.
"Steve worked tirelessly to help these associations further their involvement and prestige among the insurance industry," said Doak. "He will be greatly missed."
Garrett was also past president of the Rotary Club of Oklahoma City, and served as district governor from 1996-1997.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4400 N. Shartel Ave.
