SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Instructure, the creators of the Canvas learning platform, released an update to its Google Docs integration that makes group collaborations easier. Rather than having to share new Google Docs individually with each member of a working group, Canvas users can now grant automatic access to everyone in the group by sharing with the group's mailing list.

"We built Canvas to make teachers' and students' jobs easier," said Brian Whitmer, Instructure's chief product offer. "Our Google Docs integration is a prime example of how we're doing that."
Since its initial launch, Canvas was integrated with Google Docs to enable real-time collaborations. A cloud-computing document sharing service, Google Docs, allows users to create and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations online. Users can engage in real-time chats while working simultaneously on documents, which are automatically saved to Google's servers and are accessible from anywhere.
Beyond the benefits of easier collaborations, Google Docs solves issues of access, versioning, incompatible document formats, viruses and lifespan. It also makes group work faster, allowing users to cut down on the back and forth communication typical of asynchronous, online collaborations. The efficient group workflows enabled by Canvas' integration with Google Docs has the potential to increase both the quantity and quality of group work.
Canvas users at K-12 schools, colleges and universities use Canvas' Google Docs integration to improve group collaborations. The Park City School District and Brown University both cited the Google integration as one of the reasons they chose Canvas over competing learning management systems.
