SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Instructure (NYSE:INST), a leading software-as-a-service (SaaS) technology company and creator of the Bridge and Canvas learning management systems (LMS), today announced the release of Arc, the next-generation online video platform that enhances learning by turning one-way, passive video into inclusive, productive discussion.
Arc's two-way video engages learners by transforming content from a statement into conversation. Unlike traditional video platforms, Arc was designed for students and instructors in both K–12 and higher education. Its innovative interface lets learners and instructors engage and interact with video content in real time by commenting directly on the video timeline. Through this commenting feature, students can learn from each other's insights as well as from the instructor's direction and feedback, providing a rich community for students to learn from one another.
"It's easy for many learners to be distracted while participating in video-based learning. Without understanding where students drop off, it's difficult for instructors to know how to close the gap," said Mitch Macfarlane, senior vice president of product and customer experience at Instructure. "Arc takes a uniquely interactive approach to video-based learning. It creates an active and collaborative learning experience, which helps students retain information. Teachers can now see how students are interacting with their materials and can adjust to optimize the learning experience."
Arc also provides unique and insightful analytics that allow instructors and administrators to quickly and easily analyze which videos students are watching, how long they're watching and when they stop watching to measure engagement with materials and improve the content to increase retention and focus. This information allows instructors to optimize videos to communicate critical information and monitor student behavior.
"Arc allows faculty and students to interact with video in Canvas easily and with notable learning impact, and it has streamlined how Northwestern faculty can give feedback to students, fostering dialogue around student-created video," said Matthew Aron, blended technology lead at Northwestern University. "It is a simple tool that will continue to be an important part of the technology suite our faculty are using to innovate as they experiment with blended learning models."
Arc's video platform is a natural addition to the Instructure suite of cloud-based online learning products and seamlessly integrates with Canvas, Instructure's open online LMS for K–12 and higher education that makes teaching and learning easier. Additionally, Arc is expected to integrate in the future with Bridge, Instructure's corporate learning management system.
