Institute of Food Technologists To Host Food Policy Impact Conference In Washington D.C., December 6
WASHINGTON, Nov. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On December 6, 2012, the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) is hosting its annual Food Policy Impact Conference in Washington D.C. at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel. The conference will bring together experts in food laws, regulations and policy to learn approaches that will make a tangible impact on the future.
"The second year of Food Policy Impact will provide a great forum to debate and discuss regulatory food issue development in 2012 with food policy experts," said IFT President John Ruff. "This is our opportunity to ensure that the best and latest science is used as the basis for our food regulations."
The opening session will feature Fred H. Degnan, Partner, King & Spalding who formerly served as FDA's Associate Chief Counsel for Foods and as an Associate Chief Counsel for Enforcement. The session will cover a year in review for food policy, focusing on topics such as harmonization, global public policy influence and events, and the short- and long-term impacts of 2012 public policy events.
The morning will continue with the session "Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Advancements and Approaches," led by speakers Leon Bruner, Senior Vice President for Scientific and Regulatory Affairs and Chief Science Officer, Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and Lisa Weddig, Director, Regulatory and Technical Affairs, National Fisheries Institute. In addition to explaining how future requirements will influence business practices, the two will share their opinions on how the re-election of President Barack Obama will affect implementation of the FSMA.
Additional sessions will address hot issues such as GMOs and labeling in the U.S. food market, Canada's regulatory modernization project, and international trade agreements.
The conference will close with a session called "What's in Store for 2013 and Beyond?"
