Institute for Child and Family Health and the Youth Gang Resource Center to Present 7th Annual Gang Summit

Summit to Promote Collaboration In Combating Local Gangs

MIAMI, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Institute for Child and Family Health (ICFH), a non-profit organization that offers prevention and treatment programs for children and families in Miami-Dade County, today announced that the Youth Gang Resource Center (YGRC)  will hold its 7th Annual Gang Summit.  It will take place on September 22, 2010 at Signature Gardens, 12725 SW 122nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33186, from 9 am to 2:30 pm. The summit will offer a variety of work sessions focused on combating gangs on all fronts with prevention, intervention and suppression programs.

"Gang violence cannot be resolved by the police alone," said Javier A. Camacho, MS, Community Liaison, of the Young Gang Resource Center at the Institute for Child & Family health, "we need community-level support to fight our gang problem."

The goal of the Annual Gang Summit, funded through the Dade-Miami Criminal Justice Council, is to provide our community with a forum for education and resources in order to prevent and intervene in local gang violence. The Gang Summit brings together the many partners in our community who focus on the issues of gang violence.

Gangs and gang related violence is no stranger to South Florida, which is host to approximately 7,500 gang members and 200 different gangs.  An indication that gangs are growing more violent is the recent eight drive by shootings that took place in Kendall involving assault rifles and one of those resulted in a homicide.

Youth Gang Resource Center focuses on collecting and disseminating all available information on gangs in order to ease the burden of law enforcement in solely addressing the gang issue in Miami-Dade County. The Youth Gang Resource Center provides education and community awareness concerning gangs, provide training about local gangs for youth workers and social service providers, seek new gang funding for itself and other local entities, and advocate for gang prevention/intervention related services.
