SEATTLE, Jan. 29, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the New York Post, teachers spend an average of nearly $500 each year on classroom materials for their students. Inspirus Credit Union is pledging $100,000 to fund education grants throughout 2019 to support teachers across Washington State.
"Our mission of giving at Inspirus goes back more than 80 years," said Inspirus Credit Union President and CEO Scott Adkins. "Last year was a record year of giving back to education at Inspirus, which means more students, teachers, and faculty benefitted from our contributions. We're excited to start the New Year by pledging $100,000 to fund education grants for Washington teachers in 2019."
Last year, Inspirus fully-funded an education grant for Karen Onorati, a teacher at Pine Tree Elementary School in Kent who used the grant money to get headphones to engage her first-grade students in math and reading.
"This technology has motivated my students to work a little bit harder," said Onorati. "You have helped to influence the lives of many students by helping them build self-confidence, a joy for reading, an excitement for math and the gift of giving to others. For that I am extremely grateful."
Onorati was one of nearly 200 teachers who received education grants from Inspirus in 2018.
Teachers can request items for their classroom ranging from new books and classroom rugs for a reading corner, to science equipment and new technology for engaging students in STEM learning.
Last year, Inspirus fully-funded more than 186 education wishes, supporting nearly 20,000 students in 180 classrooms statewide.
This is the fourth year Inspirus is funding education grants through DonorsChoose.org to ensure Washington teachers have the resources they need for their classrooms.
