Inground Pool Liner Company, LOOP-LOC, Discusses Safely Storing Chemicals in the Offseason
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., Nov. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- As the winter approaches, your pool should be closed up, your leaves raked, and your pipes drained for the ominous freeze ahead. What else is there to do? Well, do you know where you pool chemicals are stored? Are they stored properly? Safely? How do you know? These are all questions that need to be asked because pool chemicals have the potential to be hazardous for people and animals if not stored correctly. Inground pool liners company, LOOP-LOC, knows the right tips for safely storing pool chemicals for a long offseason. Keep your family and pets safe by reading on.
- Store in a cool, dry place: This saying is on most household products, as well as your pool chemicals. Take this to heart! You want to store your chemicals away from any direct sunlight or water sources, preventing overheating and dampness from affecting any chemical containers. Don't take "cool" to mean freezing either– frozen chemicals will lose their effectiveness and be useless when you open them next summer, even if you don't know it.
- Have good ventilation: Many people choose to store chemicals in a garage or shed, but you need to make sure that these places have sufficient air ventilation to hold chemicals. Though ideally they would be closed tight enough to not leak, if there's chlorine in the air it can make other materials more brittle. You also don't want your family breathing in any chemical fumes, something that good ventilation can prevent.
- Close the lids–tight: Check, double-check, and triple-check your chemical lids, making sure they're completely secure and inaccessible for children, pets, and even pests. Even the smallest drop of water can stir up a chemical reaction, so you want to prevent that at all cost.
- Know your chemicals: Do a little bit of research about each chemical you're storing. For example, you want to make sure you don't put chlorine and muriatic acid near one another, as they can form a dangerous Chlorine gas. In general, it's a rule of thumb to keep acids and Chlorine products far from one another. Another tip: if you're storing Oxidizers, be careful that they do not heat up– keep them far away from any electrical outlets and boiler rooms, since they are combustible and could cause a deadly fire.
- Keep everything as it is: Store any cups or measuring items with the chemicals they came with, and don't move chemicals out of their original containers. Doing either of these runs the risk of a chemical reaction, which you want to avoid completely. In general, chemicals are already packaged in durable materials for their composition, so you need not change them at all.
Pool chemical storage can be tricky, but by following our tips above, you'll be able to rest easy knowing your family and home are safe. Store safely!
