OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Jan. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Cerner, a global leader in health care technology, has selected Infusion Express, an intravenous (IV) therapy company designed for patient convenience, as a preferred provider of IV therapy services for its health plan members in the Kansas City area.
Infusion Express offers extended weekday hours and weekend appointments, which will provide Cerner health plan members who suffer from chronic auto-immune diseases flexibility when scheduling frequent time-consuming drug therapy infusions.
"Specialty drug therapies that are used to treat chronic auto-immune disorders, such as Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, require a large recurring time investment," said Dr. David Nill, Cerner's chief medical officer. "Infusion Express enables us to provide our members with an additional option regarding where to receive their infusions that is flexible, comfortable and more efficient."
On average, hospital infusion treatment and recovery time is between four and eight hours. The extended hours the clinic offers are designed to accommodate the patient's schedule.
"Many people with chronic auto-immune disease use vacation time or take days off without pay because they've had no choice but to seek treatment during regular business hours," said Don Peterson, CEO and founder of Infusion Express. "Now Cerner health plan members will have convenient access to the treatments they need, on their own time frame."
By offering services outside of a hospital or doctor's office, Infusion Express reduces overhead and can buy prescription drugs at a discount directly from manufacturers rather than through a pharmacy.
"This collaboration is in concert with Cerner's guiding principles of seeking a seamless experience coupled with high quality care for our members. We believe a focus in this area can lead to improved outcomes and reduced costs over time," said Arielle Bogorad, Cerner's senior director of Worldwide Benefits and Wellness.
Infusion Express will use its patient engagement app to provide patients with appointment reminders, medication dosing alerts and educational information specific to their conditions.
Infusion Express has three treatment centers in the Kansas City metropolitan area with new locations opening soon in metro Chicago, San Francisco and Philadelphia.
