Infrastructure Planning is not the Key Issue for the Flying Car Industry, Says PAL-V
KASLO, British Columbia, Dec. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- A leading flying car industry executive spoke to a group of attendees at the Toronto Global Forum last week explaining that infrastructure planning is not the major challenge facing the flying car industry's future.
Mark Jennings-Bates, VP Americas for PAL-V explained the issue for federal, regional and municipal planning authorities is not the infrastructure required but the rules framework to allow the industry to mature and give us some certainty in regard to what solutions regulators will support.
"Before we enthusiastically start planning rooftop spaceports and inner-city landing platforms, it is important that infrastructure planners and managers liaise with federal airspace regulators," said Jennings-Bates, adding "A recent report from EASA, the European regulator indicated a desire to accelerate development of the rules for electric powered passenger aircraft but with one important and non-negotiable statement – that in the event of catastrophic loss of power, the vehicle must be able to 'fly to a safe landing' in control. The statement virtually changes the landscape of the prototype designs and images that we are seeing today."
PAL-V is the global flying car market leader with a production flying car currently on sale and expected to complete certification next year. The vehicle will comply with all required road and aviation regulations. "We took the simplistic approach of designing a vehicle that would be compliant rather than disruptive," said company CEO Robert Dingemanse who added "What we did find is that the journey was not as simple as we might have initially envisioned. That is precisely why we are ten years into the development and very close to completion of the certification process which would make us the world's first fully certified flying car."
The lively discussion at the Toronto Global Forum indicated the enthusiasm for alternative modes of transport to assist in freeing up the massive amount of infrastructure investment required to simply keep pace with demands of outdated modes of transport. While flying cars may not ease traffic congestion in inner city areas, they do allow the owners the freedom to bypass traffic jams using a unique town to city mobility solution.
The PAL-V Liberty, the current offering from the Dutch market leader offers a two-passenger solution for $399,000USD and is the only current vehicle on sale in the world that will allow a seamless door to door transportation solution.
