Information Update - Safe Use of Pesticides in and Around Your Home
OTTAWA, July 2, 2015 /CNW/ - Have insects or rodents invaded your home? Is your lawn or garden being destroyed by pests? If you choose to use a pesticide to deal with a pest problem, make sure to follow Health Canada's advice on how to use, store and dispose of pesticides safely.
Every year, Health Canada receives reports of Canadians becoming ill from pesticide exposure as a result of improper use. To reduce the risks to yourself, your family and the environment, always read and follow the directions and warnings on the product's label or hire a licensed pest control operator.
What you should do
Make sure to correctly identify the type of pest you are dealing with first and to take steps to control the pest population by insect or rodent-proofing your home.
If you decide to use a pesticide, make sure you buy a product that includes the name of the pest you are trying to control on the label.
Always follow these pesticide safety tips:
- Only purchase and use pesticides that have been registered by Health Canada for their intended use.
- Carefully read all label instructions and warnings before buying or using pesticides.
- Only buy the amount of the product needed for the treatment.
- Use a pesticide only for its stated purpose. For example, never use a pesticide indoors when it is intended for outdoor use.
- Never mix different pesticides together, unless the instructions tell you to do so.
Report health and safety concerns
Report any adverse events to the manufacturer, who is required by law to report it to Health Canada. Contact information can be found on the product label. You may also report an incident for products with a Pest Control Product (PCP) number directly to Health Canada by completing an incident report form.
