Summit highlights:
- Speranza Avram, executive director of the California Health Information Partnership and Services Organization (CalHIPSO), noted that the road forward toward transforming healthcare is dependent on health information technology and the adoption of electronic health records. "We are in a historical transition from paper-based care to electronic based care," she said.
- David Sayen, regional administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), talked about a number of major government-based transformation efforts, all driven by an underlying three-part aim: better health for the population, better care for individuals, and lower cost through improvement. "Fragmentation of healthcare is a big problem—we're trying a number of ways to address this," he said, citing promising programs focused on financial incentives tied to bundled payments, and value-based purchasing, among others.
- Jim Landman, director of thought leadership for the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HMFA), addressed the impact of the Supreme Count decision on the Affordable Care Act, the November presidential election and the year-end "fiscal cliff" our country faces. He also discussed the recommendations of HFMA's Value Project, released in June, noting that "Providers and payers must be relentlessly focused on value if we are to accomplish real improvement in our healthcare system."
