Infants Protected with Safe Place® Infant Security Solution at Culpeper Regional Hospital
System designed to help reduce the risk of abductions
BROOKFIELD, Wis., Aug. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- RF Technologies®, a leading provider of radio frequency identification (RFID) healthcare safety and security solutions, has installed its Safe Place® Infant Security Solution at Culpeper Regional Hospital (CRH) in Culpeper, Va., to help keep newborns safe and reduce the risk of abductions.
CRH delivers approximately 400 babies each year in its Family Birth Center, and the addition of the Safe Place Infant Security Solution brings an added measure of safety and comfort for families.
"This enhanced security system gives our new parents additional peace of mind and ensures that our littlest patients have the highest quality, safe care," said Becky Bradshaw, director of the Family Birth Center at CRH.
The Safe Place Infant Security Solution uses reliable, lightweight transmitters and patented Smart Sense® technology with multiple measures of tamper detection. The water-resistant transmitter is comfortably secured around an infant's ankle using a soft, flexible banding material.
Staff can easily monitor each baby via automated software that alerts them if a band is loose, has been tampered with, cut, or has been removed from the infant.
The system will also automatically lock the door and notify staff members of a potential security threat if an infant wearing a transmitter comes within range of a monitored exit.
One hundred thirty-two infants were abducted from healthcare facilities between 1983 and 2013, according to information released in a 2013 study by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children®. This study also reports that 111, or 84 percent, of those abductions were from within an area of the facility including the mother's room, nursery and pediatrics unit.
