Industrial Directory Reports Tulsa Manufacturing Jobs Up 1.9% Over Past Year, Remain Stable Statewide
EVANSTON, Ill, Oct. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial employment in Oklahoma increased slightly over the past year according to the 2013 Oklahoma Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports Oklahoma gained 675 industrial jobs, or about a third of a percent between August 2011 and August 2012, with employment in Tulsa up 1.9% over the same period.
Manufacturers' News reports Oklahoma is now home to 5,686 manufacturers employing 200,007 workers. Tulsa accounts for nearly a quarter of the state's industrial employment, with 47,426 jobs and 1,117 manufacturers.
"Oklahoma continues to see its manufacturing sector improve," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "The state's business-friendly environment and abundant natural resources have helped boost exports, particularly in Tulsa, where exports expanded 15.7% between 2003 and 2008. Additionally, many companies in Tulsa and across the state have boosted hiring in response to the Quality Jobs Program."
Bright spots for Tulsa included Clear Edge Filtration's announcement it would open a global headquarters; the expected opening of light pole manufacturer Ameron International's new factory; and the expansions of D&L Oil Tools; Trinity Containers; Team Oil Tools; Limco Airepair; Fisher Products LLC; and Avery Barron Industries. Statewide, Boeing announced a new plant in Oklahoma City; Malarkey Roofing opened a new plant, also in Oklahoma City; and metal tube manufacturer Webco established a new facility in Sand Springs.
MNI reports Oklahoma's largest industrial sectors by employment all posted gains over the year, with employment in top-ranked industrial machinery and equipment up 2.4%, currently accounting for 34,788 jobs. Second ranked oil and gas extraction accounts for 32,783 manufacturing jobs, up 2%, while fabricated metals represents 24,162 of the state's manufacturing jobs, up 5.4%.
Other sectors that gained jobs in Oklahoma over the past year included food products, up 3.7%; primary metals, up 2.9%; chemicals, up 1.5% and paper products, up 1%. Losses were seen in lumber/wood, down 18%, due partially to the closure of Simonton Windows' plant in McAlester. Stone/clay/glass, declined 10.4% and transportation equipment fell 3.8%, following layoffs at Tracker Marine's Miami plant, while printing/publishing declined 3.4%; electronics fell 3.3%; and textiles/apparel fell 2.3%.
Losses for the state included the; layoffs at Tracker Marine's Miami location; and the shuttering of Mercury Marine's plant in Stillwater.
Manufacturers' News reports Northeast Oklahoma accounts for the most manufacturing employment in the state with 93,031 jobs, with no significant change reported over the year. The Northwest region accounts for the second most at 63,044 jobs, up 1.2%. Southwest Oklahoma is home to 25,020 industrial workers, up 1.6%, while the Southeast accounts for 18,912, down 6.3% over the past twelve months.
MNI's city data shows Oklahoma City ranks second in the state for industrial employment with 42,354 jobs, up 2.1% over the past year. Broken Arrow is home to 5,755 industrial jobs, with no significant change reported while Lawton accounts for 3,920 jobs, down a half percent. Ponca City is home to 3,787 industrial jobs, down 7.9% over the past twelve months.
