Industrial Directory Reports Connecticut Manufacturing Employment Declined Slightly Over Year
EVANSTON, Ill., July 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Connecticut lost 1,522 manufacturing jobs over the past twelve months according to the 2013 Connecticut Manufacturers Register®, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports Connecticut's industrial employment declined by 0.7% between May 2011 and May 2012, and is in the minority of states for which MNI recorded a loss in industrial jobs. Since the beginning of 2012, MNI has reported on 22 states, 70% of which have posted a gain in manufacturing jobs over a one-year period.
Manufacturers' News reports Connecticut is now home to 5,492 manufacturers employing 210,758 workers.
"Connecticut still struggles with decreased demand and high business costs," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "When choosing a location for a new plant, manufacturers look at labor and energy costs, as well as the tax and regulatory burdens. Connecticut often has not been competitive with other states in these areas."
Transportation equipment remains Connecticut's largest industrial sector by employment, accounting for 41,681 of the state's jobs, virtually unchanged from a year ago. Industrial machinery and equipment ranks second with 26,477 industrial jobs, down 2.5%. Fabricated metals ranks as the state's third largest manufacturing sector with 26,015 jobs, down 2.6% over the past twelve months.
MNI reports industrial sectors that lost jobs over the past year included rubber/plastics, down 5.4%; stone/clay/glass down 5.1%; food products down 2.3%; lumber/wood down 2.2%; and printing/publishing down 1.5%. Gains were seen in chemicals, up 7.2%; instruments/related products up 2.3%; electronics up 1.7%; and paper products up 1%.
Bright spots for the state included the planned establishment of Tronox Inc.'s global headquarters in Stamford; the expected expansion of Alexion Pharmaceuticals in Hartford; the recent merger announcement between Beacon Industries and TECT Power; the expansion of SolarChange LLC; and the opening of a biodiesel plant in Bridgeport.
Industrial locations closing down included Marlin Firearms' plant in North Haven; Derecktor Shipyards in Bridgeport; MAHLE's facility in Trumbull; and Thames Printing in Norwich.

Third-ranked Groton is home to 7,839, with no significant change reported, while Bristol accounts for 7,040 industrial jobs, down 1% over the year.
