MARION, Ind., July 7, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) announced today that it has hired Dr. Matt Lucas as the next chancellor of IWU-National and Global Campus, the campus that oversees all non-residential services at IWU.
Lucas will succeed Audrey Hahn, the current chancellor, who in early March announced that she would retire by the end of 2017. IWU launched a national search in March for a chancellor. A search committee made recommendations to David Wright, Ph.D., President of IWU, and Wright made the final selection.
Lucas, who is currently provost and executive vice president at Corban University, will begin his duties as chancellor elect beginning Aug. 28, giving him time to work alongside Hahn for a smooth transition. Lucas will assume full responsibility as chancellor on Oct. 1.
"As we come to the close of the first quarter of the 21st century, colleges and universities find themselves under increasing pressure to redefine and reinvent themselves to meet the demands of a dynamic market and rapid technological shifts," Lucas said. "I came to IWU because I believe National and Global is poised to meet this challenge by building on a legacy of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit and creating relevant alternative approaches to higher education in the U.S. and around the world."
In his current position at Corban University, a private, independent college in Salem, Oregon, Lucas has overseen academics, enrollment and marketing, and strategic planning.
"Those who know Dr. Lucas have described him as innovative, strategic, entrepreneurial, inspirational, globally minded and gospel-centered," Wright said. "He is passionate about developing educational partners around the world with the goal of growing online enrollment."
The chancellor serves as the chief administrative officer of the IWU-National and Global Campus. This campus serves more than 10,000 students at 15 education centers in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio, as well as all online students, who come from the United States and 30 other countries. IWU's DeVoe School of Business, the School of Nursing, the School of Health Sciences, the School of Educational Leadership, the School of Service and Leadership, and the Division of Liberal Arts are all housed within the National and Global campuses.
During Lucas' tenure, Corban University created the Certificate of Education in response to a specific need among adult students in Oregon. He also developed Corban's graduate program, which has grown to several different program offerings, and he created both local and international partnerships with school districts, medical facilities, mission agencies, public entities and the Chemawa Indian School. He also started Corban's first international teaching site in Jakarta, Indonesia, and has provided oversight to international programs in five countries.
Prior to joining the staff at Corban University, Lucas worked as a secondary language arts teacher.
He has a Doctor of Arts and a Master of Arts in English from Idaho State University. He earned his Bachelor of Science in English and Secondary Education in Language Arts from Western Baptist College, where he also was named a NAIA Academic All-American in soccer.
