Bowersox is the Senior Advisor for the gem industry and organized 30 Afghan miners to attend trade shows outside of Afghanistan and has assisted with the marketing of their gems world wide.
During his visit this summer, Bowersox visited the emerald mines in Panjshir Valley and the ruby mines at Jegdalek. He also traveled to the schools in the mining areas in conjunction with the Hawaii Kai Rotary International project to furnish school supplies for the children. "The poverty these poor children live in would shake anybody with any sense of dignity to their souls," says Bowersox. While distributing school supplies Bowersox delivered eye glasses from the Kamehameha Lions Club. Bowersox is a member of both clubs.
Bowersox, who has now been in the gem business for forty years, says one of the best ways to help the people of Afghanistan is to purchase gems, which are one of their major "legal" exports, with Opium being the largest illegal export.
