LOS ANGELES, March 27, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- TIME'S UP for Hollywood, but what about incarcerated young women who have been victims of sexual abuse? As social media provides growing platforms for women to speak up about workplace discrimination and sexual abuse, many voices still remain unheard in the background. Spirit Awakening Foundation continues its 22-year legacy of arts-based, trauma-informed work in Los Angeles County by helping incarcerated girls break the silence and have their own #MeToo moment. On Saturday, March 31, the foundation will host a private performance at a juvenile correction facility for young women to share their stories of trauma and abuse.
In the past two years, women have created a powerful media platform to share stories of assault, inequality, discrimination, and abuses of authority. These brave women have generated tremendous momentum for transformation at every level of society. And their work is not done. The most vulnerable population is the country's youth, especially girls living in marginalized and economically struggling communities. Spirit Awakening Foundation (SAF), which works with at-risk and incarcerated youth, has found that all too often young women that have suffered from physical and sexual abuse find themselves in the criminal justice system and in a perpetual cycle of abuse and delinquency.
Though this event is not open to the public, the foundation will host its annual Voices of the Unheard fundraising event in the fall, during which performers will read some of the prose pieces of young women who will still be incarcerated at that time. Creating space for these stories to be heard publically is not only therapeutic for the students who write and perform but also strengthens community impetus to do more to protect those who need it most.
